TRIALOGUE

YelleB has been engaged in the past 3 years in an artistic, cross-cultural collaboration with video artist Adi Shniderman (Israel) and architect Matthias Neumann (Germany) exploring a TRIALOGUE between notions of space inherent in our respective disciplines; body space (dance), virtual and mnemonic space (video/photography), and physical space (architecture.)

We transform an existing space through performance in architectural as well as perceptual terms. The changing configurations are matched, instigated and reflected by dancers responding to ever-changing restrictions and spatial liberations. Live video feed within the space negotiates the perception of events that are often hidden from the audience. The audience itself has to move with the changing configurations, thus rendering the distinction between performer and audience insignificant.

Our collaboration initiated as a loose dialog between disciplines and has retained a collaborative process with no discipline taking precedence over the other. The site of the performance, the virtual interaction and the physical reaction to the dynamic environment inform the choreographic choices we make. Each project creates an organic world, where interdependency and interconnectivity dictate a new approach towards each discipline, spilling new lights upon them.

COLLABORATORS

Matthias Neumann (Architect) was born in Germany, where he received his diploma in architecture in 1999. He has traveled extensively and has lived in Ireland, Canada, Italy and Germany before relocating to New York City in 2000. He co-founded the interdisciplinary design group normaldesign in 2002, which he has been leading as a full-time design practice since 2004. His work focuses on the correlation of designed space with its aesthetic, social and idiomatic implications. Within this context of a wide conception of architectural space he has been continuously engaged both with the academic and artistic realm through teaching, production and collaboration. He currently teaches at New York Institute of Technology. The architectural production of normaldesign has enjoyed international recognition in publications and exhibitions. Projects include the finalist entry for the WTC memorial competition in New York, the winning competition entry to the Aviation Museum in Krakow, Poland, and the winning competition for the Africa Centre for contemporary African Art near Cape Town, South Africa.

Adi Shniderman (Photographer/Video Artist) In his works Adi is interested in space and the dichotomies that arise from the meeting of different spaces. The space between spaces, the border line between two or more ares such as the built environment and the natural landscape, private space as well as public space, cultural as well as commercial, movable or stationery.  Adi's work is about the nature of people and the environment, the encounter of people and the space that surround them. Adi is also interested in a collaborative process, the influence of other disciplines on his work and the ability of combined vision to articulate ideas of space that could be seen in video pieces he made for and with sculptors, choreographers, and architects.

Adi, a self-thought photographer who lives and work in Brooklyn New York, has been involved in an eclectic number of projects from photography based, to video, to collaborations with architects, musicians and dance performers. Adi exhibited internationally in England, Poland, Spain, Israel, Greece, as well as in New York City. Among the works are Air condition, a video work which he made together with his wife sculptor Merav Ezer, and Goofsa a cross media collaboration between himself, Architect Mathias Neumann, and choreographer Ella Ben-Aharon, a work that brought video, architecture and dance performance together to form unique interpretation of body movement in space.
